Preschool Program

At Westmount Preschool, our primary goal is to instill in your child a positive attitude toward learning. We approach this goal by developing a curriculum in which activities encompass five areas of child development. While these areas are neatly divided for the purposes of discussion and child-evaluation, classroom activities usually contain three or more skill areas.

Social:
turn-taking, sharing, the give and take of communication, self-help skills, conflict-resolution
Emotional:
self-esteem building, autonomy, identification and communication of emotions, healthy and creative outlets for emotions
Physical:
promotion of fine and gross motor skills like eye-hand coordination, rhythmicity, spatial awareness, modes of locomotion, promotion of healthy habits like eating, hygiene, and relaxation
Cognitive:
a whole language approach to pre-reading and writing skills, language experiences, pre-math and science activities like rote-counting, one to one correspondence, pattern recognition and extension, sorting, graphing, measuring, concept of number
Creative:
hands-on experience with a variety of materials, open-ended art, music, movement and language activities, opportunities for dramatic play, creative use of communication for problem-solving and conflict resolution
